Description
This auction is for a 1715 Mo J Mexico Royal Cob (Galano) graded by NGC as XF Details. As would be expected of the Royal Cobs, this one has a hole at the 12 o'clock position and NGC described it as mount removed (though I cannot see any trace). The detail on this royal cob is exceptional and the toning is very pleasing. This coin has been off the market for many years and is now fresh to the market. The royal issues are legendary and hardly need an introduction. But, for those who may be unfamiliar with them they were cobs which were created using specially prepared planchets and dies. Regular issue cobs are crude and vary wildly in shape. The royal issues were made using round planchets and a different set of dies. Every care was taken to make sure an even strike and full detail was present on both the obverse and reverse. It is believed that they were used as presentation pieces to prove the capability of the mint and given to high ranking politicians and royalty such as governors, viceroys and even the king.
I have photographed this coin in both indoor and outdoor (indirect sunlight) for your consideration. I have not enhanced the pictures in any way and used a 1st generation iPhone SE to take the pictures. This coin is exceptional and will surely be a highlight of any Mexican or Spanish Colonial collection.
This example is truly exceptional. Yes, you can find lower grade issues for less, and if you are shopping for a low price point, this example probably isn't for you. But if you want an exceptional Mexico royal issue, then this coin definitely has you covered in all aspects!
