    Description

Detailed large-format fold-out 1943 map of Africa showing colonial possessions, printed during the Second World War, more than 77 years ago.
This map opens to 31½" x 29½" and is drawn on a scale of 185 miles to one inch, which provides excellent detail, including railways, automobile roads, caravan routes, canals, and natural features.
A color key identifies British, French, Italian, Belgian, Portuguese, and Spanish colonial administrations, as well as independent nations.
Among the named places and features are Italian Somaliland, Tanganyika, French Equatorial Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mozambique, Rio Muni, Liberia, Bechuanaland, Kalahari Desert, Tunisia, Northern Rhodesia, Belgian Congo, the Slave Coast, Portuguese Guinea, South Africa, Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, Nigeria, Cairo, Capetown, Eritrea, Togo, and more.
There are two insets at the lower right. One depicts the Cape Verde Islands on the same scale as the main map; the other shows relief, with color shading for varying altitudes.
There is also a mileage chart giving airline distances in statute miles.
