    Description

    Smith,
    Wallace H.
DRAKE'S DRUM Presented by the Triangle Club of Princeton University. [ORIGINAL PROGRAM].
New York: The Grolier Craft Press, Inc., [1923]. Octavo, 10 inches high by 6-3/4 inches wide. Softcover, stapled wraps titled and illustrated in black & white within an orange background on the front cover. The covers are very lightly soiled. 48 pages, profusely illustrated throughout with pictorial ads as well as portraits including group photos of the members of
    "The Triangle Club 1923-1924"
    and Princeton's
    "1923 Football Team".
    The text includes the poem
    "Legend of the Drum"
by P.Lloyd-Smith and J.S. Taylor, the multi-page program titled
"The Triangle Club of Princeton University Presents Drake's Drum: A Musical Comedy in Two Acts",
and an essay about The Princeton Triangle Club entitled
"A Centre for Dramatic and Musical Life of Princeton".
L.E. Laflin's name is underlined in pencil several times in the program. Laflin co-wrote the dialogue, lyrics and music with Wallace H. Smith. Very good.
As per Alexander Leitch in "A Princeton Companion" published in 1978:
"Another star of the twenties was Wallace H. Smith '24, one of the finest comedians in the club's history. In his senior year he wrote 'Drake's Drum,' based on a poem about Sir Francis Drake by the English poet Alfred Noyes, a visiting professor at Princeton. Critics called this the best Triangle production ever; its book, dialogue, music, lyrics, costumes, scenery, acting and dancing were all effectively combined to make it a standard by which succeeding shows were judged...."
Founded in 1891, the Princeton Triangle Club is one of the oldest collegiate theater troupes in the U.S.
