KM 102.2, two year type, issued when Mexico was under Spanish control, in the name of King Carlos III.  Half dollar size silver coin, with the king on the obverse.
Silver coins of Mexico were legal tender in the United States until 1857, and the U. S. dollar was based upon the Spanish Colonial 8 reales coin (formal name: "Peso de 8 reales"). One real became known as one "bit"; this is why "2 bits" equals a quarter dollar.
The 4 reales denomination was minted in much smaller quantities than the other denominations, and most show heavy usage. I know of one collector who ended his type set of Spanish Colonial coins, because he could not find a decent 4!
One version of the basis of the dollar sign is that it evolved from the drawing of the two pillars with the ribbons on them.
This coin was in a collection that I purchased in Texas in 1996.
